Christmas Tree Basket Pattern

- #5 Bulky weight yarn – Bernat Maker Minis were used for this Christmas tree basket in white, red, and green colors. Approximately 70 yds used in total (35 yds red, 30 yds white, 5 yds green).
- 4.5 mm crochet hook – using this smaller hook size with the bulky weight yarn creates tighter stitches, giving the basket more structure.
- Yarn needle – to weave in ends.
- Scissors – for cutting yarn.

Size & Pattern Notes
- Size: The basket pictured is 4.5” tall. The base measures 4.5” in diameter.
- Gauge: Not that important, but approx. 8 rows of 8 SC stitches in 2” square.
- Joined Rounds: This basket is worked in joined rounds. Join last stitch to first with a slip stitch, ch 1. Start next round in same stitch.
- Tapestry Crochet: The body is worked in tapestry crochet following a graph. Carry inactive yarn colors behind the active yarn. Working in the back loops only helps hide the carried yarn.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Basket Base
- Round 1: In red, magic circle, ch 1, 6 SC into ring, sl st join to first SC, ch 1 (6)
- Round 2: 2 SC in each st around, join, ch 1 (12)
- Round 3: *2 SC in first st, SC in next st, repeat from * around, join, ch 1 (18)
- Round 4: *2 SC in first st, SC in next 2 sts, repeat from * around, join, ch 1 (24)
- Round 5: *2 SC in first st, SC in next 3 sts, repeat from * around, join, ch 1 (30)
- Round 6: *2 SC in first st, SC in next 4 sts, repeat from * around, join, ch 1 (36)
- Round 7: *2 SC in first st, SC in next 5 sts, repeat from * around, join, ch 1 (42)
- Round 8: *2 SC in first st, SC in next 6 sts, repeat from * around, join, ch 1 (48)
- Round 9: *2 SC in first st, SC in next 7 sts, repeat from * around, join, ch 1 (60)
The basket base will measure approx 4.25-4.5” in diameter.
2. Basket Height (Tapestry Colorwork)
The next rounds are worked in the back loops only (BLO). The round count will start at 1 again. Each round is worked in BLO SC with a join and ch 1 at the end of each round.
Notes: r = red, w = white, and g = green. Carry inactive yarn behind.

The graph is 15 stitches wide; however, the basket is 60 stitches around. The graph will need to be repeated for a total of 4 times for the 60 stitches around the basket.
3. Top of Basket (Handles)
In the next two rounds, the basket handles will be worked. If you don’t want handles, just work a round of SC and skip the chain stitches.
- Round 15: In the back loops only, SC in first 2 sts, ch 12, skip next 10 sts, SC in next 20 sts, ch 12, skip next 10 sts, SC in last 18 sts, join, ch 1. (60 SC sts and 24 chs = 74 stitches total)
- Round 16: In the back loops only, SC in each st around including in each of the chain stitches forming the handles, join. (74)
Fasten off. Weave in all ends and cut yarn.
